More than 200 people attended our groundbreaking
conference, Coming out with the Goods: care services for
LGBT people, in Manchester last month.
The conference was co-hosted by David Pennells, chair of our
LGBT Workers' Group and Chris Wroe, vice chair of the group (both
pictured right).
Delegates included providers, representatives from lesbian, gay,
bisexual and transgender (LGBT) communities, people who use
services, CSCI staff and representatives of voluntary
organisations.
It was very well received by those who attended. Comments
from delegates included:
- "Fantastic day. Great facilities, well organised, nice people.
I think many people will feel inspired to move forward on this
issue"
- "Really excellent conference. I have taken away so much
information, which I can share with colleagues in the council.
Great job."
The conference was opened by Paul Snell, Chief Inspector of
CSCI. It focused on the needs and experiences of LGBT people
who use care services, the legislative duties of care providers,
and the development of good practice in providing quality care in
this context.
The programme started with a new video produced by
CSCI which highlights the issues around the use of care services by
LGBT people.
The rest of the day included keynote speeches from:
- CSCI’s Chief Inspector, Paul Snell,
- Director of Regional Operations and Service Development for Age
Concern England, Heléna Herklots
- Vice Chair of Press for Change, Christine Burns MBE.
