Disability Equality Scheme
20 December 2006
Our new Disability Equality Scheme says how we will eliminate
discrimination in the workplace and what we expect from social care
providers and councils.
About the scheme
The scheme details how we intend to meet our duties under the
Disability Discrimination Act 2005 as an employer,
a regulator and an inspectorate.
The scheme also sets out how we will:
- promote equality of opportunity
- promote positive attitudes towards people with a
disability
- encourage participation by disabled people
- take whatever steps are necessary to make sure we meet disabled
people’s needs.
Our chief inspector Paul Snell said: “We have appointed
diversity champions in each region and are working with disability
groups on all aspects of our work.
"We want to make sure that inspections look at what is important
to people and that all our publications are easy to understand and
available in different formats."
We are training all our inspectors in different
methods of communicating with people with a physical or sensory
impairment.
As well as making sure our publications are more user friendly,
our website recently won an award for
accesibility.

The Disability Equality Scheme is part of our wider Equalities and Diversity Strategy, published in
August 2006.
It builds on what we have already committed to do and integrates
disability equality into our day-to-day business.
