What are abuse and neglect?
Abuse and neglect are when a person treats someone else
badly.
Abuse can be lots of things. For example
- Hitting someone
- Pushing someone
- Saying things that will upset someone
Neglect is when a person does not care for someone else
in the way that they should. For example
- Giving someone a plate of food but not giving them a knife or
fork to eat it with
- Leaving someone on their own for too long if they need help or
if they have no-one to talk to
How often do abuse and neglect happen?
Abuse and neglect do not happen very often in social care
services.
But they do happen sometimes and it needs to stop.
It is a crime to abuse or neglect someone in a social care
service.
It is also a crime not to tell someone if you know that abuse
and neglect are happening.
